Battle of the Year 2010 @ Emporium

On 6 May, the Emporium, one of Bangkok’s most exclusive fashion malls, became the arena for ‘B-Boy Battle of the year 2010’. Five-man break-dance teams each got 10 minutes to impress an enthusiastic crowd gathered on the plaza in front of the mall. Lots of people flocked to watch the b-boys break dancing. The audience wasn’t just the b-boy lovers. It ranged from b-girls in baggy tracksuits to businessmen in designer suits.

Amid flashing lights and pounding beats, the gruelling battle continued late into the evening. Until the last two teams played on the stage at 11PM, there were still a lot of crowd whooping, cheering and dancing along with the B-boys on the stage.

Despite their differing ages and very different dress codes, the crowd of shoppers, businesspeople and teenagers all had fun cheering on the b-boys. But Thais seem to have a natural gift for holding events and enjoying an open, positive atmosphere all together. In Thailand, a major political crisis is clearly no excuse for losing your smile. Thailand is still a great place, even in the worst of times.
