Bophut – Koh Samui

“Whether you’re sun-seeking, feasting on world-class cuisine, beach partying or discovering wellness in an exclusive spa, Koh Samui has it all covered”

Bophut

Nestled on the beautiful north coast of Koh Samui, between Mae Nam to the west, and Bang Rak in the east, Bophut is a lovely and serene beach village with a distinctive Mediterranean feel. Featuring a splendid beach that curves in a beautiful 3 Km long crescent, a beautiful seafront harboring some of the island’s most spectacular traditional boats and with a background giving a magnificent view on the mountainous Koh Pha Ngan Island.

Fisherman’s Village

Bophut is well-known for its picturesque and historic “Fisherman’s Village”, which takes up the middle section of the beach. Originally associated to the Chinese fishermen families who migrated from the island of Hainan in southern China and established a new community on Koh Samui. Some descendants of those original families still live and work in Bophut. Picturesque wooden houses and shops, built in the 19 th and 20 th centuries and decorative red Chinese lanterns dotted around the streets serve as a reminder of the rich heritage of the area.
Fisherman’s Village especially attracts families, couples and older travelers, it has gained its reputation for being the most elegant, modern and well-preserved place on the island. Lined by those old wooden Chinese shop-houses, among a few modernized buildings that match the tone. This has probably got a lot to do with the fact that it was the main French settlement on the island for many years. Many of the buildings on the beach side of the road are open at the back, offering amazing views across the sea towards Koh Phangan. Those are mostly seafood and some trendy restaurants, with tables spreading out onto the sand of the adjacent beach.

Friday Walking Street Market

Fisherman’s Village charm is enhanced with its weekly Friday night market, it happens every Friday from 5-10 pm. It is one of the biggest markets on Koh Samui Island. Visitors enjoy the traffic-free walking street lined with vendors and stalls selling plenty of snacks and drinks spreading scents and smells of Thai cuisine, local musicians and traditional Thai dancers perform for passing audiences entertaining passers, among many street vendors and shops trade their handmade crafts and natural products.
